According to the Sports & Fitness Industry Association, there are currently over 5 million active players of pickleball in the United States alone! If you are looking for a fun new activity to try, pickleball could be just what you need.

We’ve put together this basic guide to all things pickleball to help you learn everything you need to know as you get started.

What is pickleball?

Pickleball is mainly a paddle sport for two to four players; it’s been around since the 1960’s. The game was initially created as an alternative to tennis for people of all ages and abilities.

Over the years, pickleball has grown in popularity and is now one of the most popular sports in America. The most explosive growth has been in the last several years.

What do I need to play pickleball?

To start playing pickleball, you only need some pickleball balls (make sure you have indoor and outdoor balls), a beginner paddle, and a court to play on.

Balls are available in various colors, sizes, and materials to suit different skill levels and preferences. Using a ball that is the right size for your skill level is essential. Playing with a smaller ball will improve your accuracy and give you more time to hit your shots. However, playing with a larger ball will make it easier for you to get around the court.

Pickleball paddles are a different story.

For a beginner, choosing the right pickleball paddle can seem overwhelming but you really need to focus on:

  • weight (very important)
  • handle length (very important)
  • core material (rather important)
  • surface material (really less important)
  • shape (so-so important)

What’s the size of a pickleball Court?

A pickleball court is typically around the same size as a double’s badminton court. It is usually between two and four meters wide and one meter deep, that’s approximately 44 feet long and 20 feet wide. This makes playing on a smaller court easier and gives more space to move around than on a standard tennis court. Some courts can be longer or shorter, depending on the space available.

The important thing is to ensure that your court is clear of any obstructions so that you can move around quickly while playing. It is also essential to ensure that the courts have a clear line dividing the two ends of the court so that you don’t end up hitting the ball into the middle of the court by mistake!

Pickleball vs. Tennis: What’s the Difference?

There are several critical differences between pickleball and tennis, such as:

  • In pickleball, players can choose to be defensive or offensive; they aren’t required to always be ready to receive the ball as in tennis.
  • Each team has four members instead of six; one fewer person on each side of the net.
  • The ball is served (see also serve with confidence) to another player on the opposing team instead of returned to the serving team.
  • There are different scoring methods in pickleball that add an element of fun to the games.
  • No rackets or racquets are used. The ball comes directly off a paddle instead of the strings of a racket.
  • Pickleball games can last up to three hours or more when played at a high level.

How Can I Get Started?

Suppose you are entirely new to the game of pickleball. In that case, it is probably a good idea to start with a beginner’s class or membership so you can get used to the game’s rules and learn the basics of the technique before going out and playing on your own.

Find a pickleball club near you which may offer beginner’s classes where you can learn basic skills under the supervision of an instructor. You can move on to more advanced lessons once you have learned the basics, allowing you to practice and develop your skills with other players.

You can also get a pickleball ball machine and practice anytime you want as you do not need anyone with you.

Once you have mastered the basic techniques, you can either start playing at local clubs or take it one step further and enter competitive tournaments. These tournaments tend to attract players from all over the country, so you will have the chance to develop your skills and make a name for yourself in the pickleball community.
